Aluminum Die Casting vs Zinc Die Casting for Custom Components
2026-06-17 11:15:40

Aluminum and zinc die casting both support custom metal components, but they solve different problems. Buyers should compare size, weight, detail, surface finish and assembly requirements before choosing.

Aluminum Die Casting vs Zinc Die Casting for Custom Components

Why this comparison matters for OEM buyers

A larger housing may benefit from aluminum weight savings, while a small connector or threaded fitting may benefit from zinc alloy detail and surface quality.

How a factory reviews this choice

Huabo usually reviews aluminum and zinc projects separately because mold design, trimming, machining and finishing risks are different.

When the cheaper-looking option becomes more expensive

A zinc part may look more expensive by weight but save machining on small detailed parts. An aluminum part may reduce weight but need more machining on functional surfaces.

Information to include in the RFQ

Provide part size, weight target, threads, surface finish, mating components and annual quantity.

Do not compare aluminum and zinc only by weight

Zinc is heavier, but it can cast fine details and small features with less secondary machining. Aluminum is lighter, but thin ribs, large flat faces and heat paths need more DFM attention. A fair cost comparison should include mold complexity, trimming, CNC machining, surface treatment and inspection, not only raw material cost per kilogram.

Quotation discipline

Send the same drawing and surface standard to both material routes if you are comparing them. Otherwise one supplier may quote a raw casting while another includes machining, plating and inspection, making the comparison misleading.
