Perforated Aluminum Die Casting Cover Design for Ventilation Parts
2026-06-17 09:57:55

Perforated covers look simple, but they can be difficult to cast cleanly. Openings, ribs and thin edges create challenges for filling, trimming and burr control.

Design notes for ventilation openings

Openings should be designed with enough edge strength. Very thin bridges can deform, break during trimming or create flash that is hard to remove.

Surface finish consideration

Coating or painting can improve appearance, but trapped powder or paint around small holes should be considered for visible covers.

Ventilation cover design is a balance

The designer usually wants more open area for airflow, while the manufacturing process needs enough metal around openings for strength and stable casting. The best design balances both requirements.

Questions before confirming the design

  • How much airflow is needed?
  • Which side is visible after assembly?
  • Are the openings safe to touch after deburring?
  • Will the cover be painted or powder coated?
  • Does the cover need flatness control?

Manufacturing tip

Very narrow bridges between openings may create flash or breakage. If the cover is decorative, enough edge width should be reserved for clean finishing.

Engineering Detail: Ventilation Openings Need Enough Metal Around Them

A perforated cover needs openings for airflow, but the metal bridges between openings still need to fill, cool and survive trimming. If openings are too close together, the casting may have flash, weak edges or difficult deburring. The opening pattern should be reviewed for both airflow and manufacturability.

When Surface Finish Becomes Difficult

Small holes and narrow slots can trap coating powder or paint. If the cover is visible, this can affect appearance. If airflow is important, excessive coating build-up around openings may also reduce the effective open area.
